The commercial consumption of maize, wheat and sorghum in the SADC region, comprising of 15 member states which includes South Africa, Angola, Botswanna and more, amounted to 39 million tons against regional productions of 34 million tons.
South Africa is the largest producer and consumer of maize in the sub-region, with 42% of maize produced in South Africa and 37% consumed in South Africa. South Africa was also the leading supplier of maize to regional markets with 75% of the region’s import requirements of 1.2 million tons exported.
