After the US threatened to suspend the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) benefits, one of the largest poultry producers in South Africa, the SA Poultry Association (Sapa), said that they should maintain their dominance in the market and have to protect the thousands of jobs within poultry industry. Sapa are supported by the Food and Allied Workers Union.

US threatened South Africa on Friday to suspend the AGOA benefits within 60 days, unless South Africa made an agreement on the issues surrounding the meat, poultry and pork.

Sapa argued that they should maintain their dominance so that South Africa can remain globally competitive in the poultry market. The Association has to protect the 60,000 and 80,000 jobs of people employed in the poultry industry, in which they have the full support of the Food and Allied Workers Union.
