Deputy President hosts Labour Relations Indaba
On 4 November 2014, the Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, hosted a labour relations Indaba that considered critical labour market issues relating to social dialogue and the transformation of the South African labour relations environment. The Indaba was announced in the State of the Nation Address in June when President Zuma urged social partners to address the state of the labour relations environment and, in particular, to explore issues such as wage inequality and the length and violence in strike actions. Postal strike
According to information received from the SA Post Office, it has finally being granted an interdict against striking workers, making it illegal for them to approach any post office facility to within 500 m or less. This makes it possible for the SA Police to act against workers who block entrances to places of work or who intimidate employees who report for duty. The support from the SA Police Service has been excellent and levels of intimidation dropped across the Gauteng province. Read more

Agri SA’s congress 2014
In Agri SA’s 110 year of existence the congress theme was: “Family Farming in a Transforming Society”, noting the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations’ theme for 2014, celebrating the immense contributions of family farming to societies around the globe. Congress focused on three core challenges faced by family farms as major contributors to the sector’s performance, i.e. the road to meaningful and sustainable land reform; human relations for a prosperous agricultural sector; and enhancing economic progress for the spectrum of farmers.Read more

Ministerial Workshop on the Strengthening of Relative Rights held on 25 October 2014
Minister Nkwinti called a workshop on 25 October 2014, to discuss the outcome of the Land Tenure conference that took place in September 2014, as well as the implementation of, Chapter 6 of the National Development Plan. Agri SA was represented at the Workshop by Johannes Möller, Hans van der Merwe, Annelize Crosby and Theo Boshoff. Read more

Nedlac concludes with the Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill
For the past three months Agri SA formed part of the Business delegation that deliberated on the Promotion and Protection of Investment Bill at Nedlac, the process came to a conclusion on 21 October 2014. The is primarily aimed maintaining investor confidence in South Africa as it the incumbent Bill earmarked to replace the various bilateral investment treaties that have recently elapsed without being renewed. Agri SA attends the continental conference on land grabs
As a follow-up to the South Africa conference held in June this year, Agri SA also attended the continental conference on land grabs late in October. “Land grabs” in this sense refers to large-scale acquisitions of high value agricultural land, minerals and strategic water resources in Africa by foreign governments or multi-national corporations. Although there radical assumptions and statements made at times, the final conclusions were meaningful.

Natural resources
Implementation of the National Water Resource Strategy (NWRS-2)
Agri SA participated in a national workshop held by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) on the implementation of the NWRS-2. Agri SA was also included in the Department’s Water Sector Leadership Group (WSLG), which undertook the preliminary consultations with stakeholders. The Department was briefed on the economic situation prevailing in the industry. Concerns pertaining to the survival of the sector were specifically highlighted. Read more

Veiligheidshulp aan boerderygemeenskappe
Die Agri Securitas Trustfonds het weer finansiële steun bewillig aan verskeie boerderygemeenskappe om hulle in staat te stel om hulle veiligheid te verbeter. Versekering
Probleme met die verkryging van oesversekering in die Noordwes-provinsie
Dit het onlangs onder Agri SA se aandag gekom, dat boere in die Noordwes-provinsie probleme ondervind om oesversekering vir die komende plantseisoen te bekom. Agri SA het omvattende gesprekke met die herversekeringsmaatskappy Munich Re, die plaaslike versekeringsmaatskappye soos onder andere ABSA, Mutual & Federal en Santam, asook Graan SA gevoer.

Dr. Evelyn Nguleka as WFO Acting President
WFO Community welcomes Dr. Evelyn Nguleka, former WFO Vice President as WFO Acting President and Mr. Piet Vanthemsche as WFO Acting Vice-President. WFO General Assembly will be called to vote for the next President at its 2015 session in June 2015 in Milan, Italy.
