Developing farmersMakhathini cotton projectPhenias Gumede, Agri SA’s deputy president and Omri van Zyl also from Agri SA together with Mike Black from Kwanalu and Henny Bruwer from Cotton SA attended a launch event in Natal for an important upgrade to the cotton gin in the Makhathini flats. Phenias organised the meeting with a group of several hundred small holder farmers where issues of job creation and food security were discussed. |

Natural resourcesDraft Waste Pricing StrategyAgri SA submitted its concerns to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and National Treasury on the draft Waste Pricing Strategy after the organisation was informed of the discussions Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) had with the DEA, which revealed the following intention in respect of imposing some form of levy or tax on certain products. There appears to be an implacable intention to impose some form of tax or levy by government. Read more |

Land reformAn update on the Agri Parks conceptThe concept of ‘Agri Parks’ was introduced by the President in his state of the nation address (SONA) as part of his 9 point plan to stimulate growth in the economy. The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has been tasked with developing the concept as a means of securing market access for small holder farmers and land reform beneficiaries. International tradeAGOA updateOn 21 July 2015, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office commenced an out-of-cycle review of South Africa’s eligibility to receive tariff benefits under the extended African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Arguments for and against South Africa’s participation in AGOA were heard in Washington, DC on 7 August 2015. During the hearing, a number of American business representative organisations highlighted what they believed to be unfair trade and investment practices in South Africa. |

Young farmersAgri Eastern Cape’s young farmer crownedAt Agri Eastern Capes’ gala dinner on 4 August 2015, the 32-year-old Paul Collett was named the regional winner of the Toyota Young Farmer of the Year award. Paul is married to Valarie and the couple have two children. He hails from Speelmanskop near Cradock, farms with Angora goats, Angus cattle and Dohne sheep as well as maize and lucerne. |
