On Tuesday, AGRI SA pleaded with the government “to prioritise disaster relief to agriculture”‚ especially in regions, such as those in the North West‚ Free State and KwaZulu, that are drought-stricken.
According to Agri SA president, Johannes Möller, severe financial losses had made it more difficult for farmers “to operate their businesses sustainably or to meet their obligations to financial institutions”.
If the government does not intercede, it “would result in lower crop production‚ labour shedding and rising food prices as has been the case … this year”.
