Mequatling Smokin’ Jo (WB 15 306), a Black Angus bull, was sold for R140 000, a new SA record for the breed, at the recent Mequatling Red and Black Angus 50th production auction in Clocolan in the Free State.

The previous record – R130 000 – was set by Mequatling Banger in 2012, according to Mequatling Red and Black Angus breeder, Philip Barnard.

Smokin’ Jo’s sire is HF Kodiak 5R and its dam is Mequatling Lassie 9003. Kodiak’s semen was imported from Hamilton Farms near Calgary in the US.

In growth tests, Smokin’ Jo scanned the highest of 116 bulls, with a dressing percentage of 67%. He achieved an average daily weight gain of 136, and a feed efficiency index of 116.

“The Angus is the world’s largest beef breed, with superior beef marbling, a good reproduction record and no horns,” Barnard said.
